Right to Have Life or Bear Arms?

This morning I woke up to the news that 50 people were shot dead in an LGBTQ Orlando nightclub. My first instinct was to check Fox News because two years in America have taught me, if it’s a Muslim you can guarantee Fox News has the Islamophobia part covered. Not to my surprise this is the headline on their website:

“BREAKING NEWS: 50 MURDERED, 53 WOUNDED IN POSSIBLE ACT OF ISLAMIC TERROR IN ORLANDO GAY CLUB; GUNMAN KILLED BY COPS Shooter ID’d as Omar Mateen, 29, a US citizen with Afghan ties.”

I acknowledge Islam as a religion doesn’t allow for the practice of homosexual encounters, but Islam as a religion does not promote killing others because their values don’t coincide with ours.

CAIR — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (the largest Muslim advocacy group in the US) has publicly condemned the attacks and has encouraged Muslims in Orlando to donate blood.

The larger issue with this event is how easy it is to get a gun in America and that needs to change. Gun ownership in America is deeply rooted in its culture, so totally banning it is not a practical approach.

Elections are coming up for lot of you American citizens, lookup the lawmakers that are running for elected office and vote for the ones who actively are promoting smart gun laws.

Posting your grief on social media is easy, taking action is the harder part and I request you to take action for once. For your state’s current gun laws, checkout this site I just stumbled upon: gunlawscorecard.org .

I grieve with my LGBTQ brothers & sisters today, regardless of their race & religion.

P.S. Angelos, please be safe, A Man with weapons and possible explosives was arrested and was going to L.A. gay pride parade, sources say.
