Hi folks,

I took a break from writing, but now I’m excited to tell you that I passed my cybersecurity exam from ISC(2). I want to share my experience and answer some questions I received after posting my results on X (Twitter).

Just before we get right into it, here’s a backstory; I hesitated in posting/sharing about the certification but my people said NO! You can’t be keeping certifications and achievements in your closet and that led to my tweet which spiraled and came with tons of questions from people.

I’d be addressing some of the questions that was asked repeatedly and hopefully this is able to help.

  • Is ISC(2) examination free? No it is not free but they’re offering free vouchers to write the exam for free till the 31st of Dec 2023. This was what I used in writing my exam.
  • How can I access the free voucher? Visit www.isc.org and register. Further instructions are available on the webpage.
  • Is it a virtual or physical center examination? It’s not a virtual examination, you have to physically walk into a center to write your exam.
  • Are centers automatically allocated or you pick your center based on your preference and location? Centers are not automatically allocated. ISC(2) has centers in some states and you can check for an available center that’s close to you (available centers and states are shown while you’re registering). Also not that some states don’t have anymore open dates and you might have to travel down to another state which has an open date.
  • What method of identification did you use? I was able to use my international passport and voters card for identification.
  • What study material did you use? I used the ISC(2) course materials and quizzes to study but prior to this I was already covering cybersecurity fundamentals on Cisco Networking Academy and they sufficiently covered the scope of the examination.
  • Was the exam question made of objectives (MCQ)? Yes the mode was MCQ base and answers cannot be edited once you’ve gone on to the next question.
  • How long did it take for you to prepare for the exam? It took me about a month and half to study the ISC(2) materials but note that I had already been learning on Cisco about 3–4months back.
  • What tech school did you attend? I did not attend any tech academy or school for this exam. I learnt using ISC(2) material online and their quiz cards.

These were most of the questions that recurred and I hope I’ve been able to give answers to them.

There’s a final question which I’d like to address separately as quite a number of people asked.

  • How do I get started in cybersecurity? I’m going to answer this from how I started and also give reference to an article I wrote earlier. I started learning about cybersecurity from Cisco Networking Academy, ISC(2), X Spaces, contents on Cybersecurity Communities on X and reaching out to people in the cybersecurity field for guidance. Cisco Networking Academy has lots of module which are quite suitable for beginners and it also has a lot of practical lab exercises. ISC(2) has about five chapters and they are very easy to understand with flash cards, quizzes to help test your knowledge per module in a chapter.

Here’s the link to my previous article on how I transitioned to cybersecurity and got started:

If you found this helpful, don’t forget to leave a clap and share with others that might also find it helpful. Thank you.
