Losing your job might not be a bad thing
Losing your job might not be a bad thing.
Many of you were recently laid off, had your job offer revoked, or denied a new career opportunity due to the ongoing pandemic.
You might feel rejected, anxious, or upset.
With such negative emotions, losing your job is undoubtedly a bad thing. Right?
Not quite. Not yet.
Things that seem bad are not always bad.
Five years ago, my internship offer with a major energy company was revoked due to “changing business needs.”
I was devastated!
I felt wronged. I felt like my whole life was taken away from me — forever condemned to mediocrity.
I was quick to judge losing my internship as a “bad” experience. In retrospect, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
That single experience forced me to expand my horizon and pursue other opportunities outside of the energy industry.
I developed new passions for business, finance, design, and technology. I worked on Wall Street and learned to code.
Losing my job offer was not a bad thing as I had believed. It was a good thing.
Here’s my point: Things that seem bad are not always bad.
Success in your career and life is not determined by whether or not there are obstacles in your way. What matters is how well you can overcome these obstacles.
If something “bad” happens to you, and you tackle it head-on, grow from it, and come out the other side a better person, maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing.
If you (or anyone you know) have recently lost your job, I sincerely empathize with you. It’s hard not to feel wronged or upset.
However, I encourage you to look into the possibilities that the future holds. There’s another job out there that’s twice as fulfilling as your last job. There’s another job out there that pays twice as much.
Losing your job might not be a bad thing.
You have an opportunity to turn a “bad” experience into the best thing that ever happened to you.
Take it!
