Holly, Thank you for the bold truth of “what is.” Unfortunately, many commenters here are caught up in labels, arguing about simplifications of “capitalism,” “socialism” and “communism,” the latter two having been villified by capitalists. Point is, global capitalism is killing life on our little blue planet because profit is the driving force. To come up with real solutions to the many crises we face requires understanding the basis of our economic system (a la Adam Smith) and being willing to embrace radical change to prioritize values of care, wellbeing, equitable distribution, commons, and natural balance into whatever systems of commerce we have yet to devise.

We need a new story, not to try and fix the old one that clearly isn’t working, and cannot given its premises of fear and scarcity. Thinkers such as Peter Jacobs (Zeitgeist Movement), Charles Eisenstein (author of “The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Can Imagine”), Triple Bottom Liners (“people, planet, profits”) and many others are proposing ways to rethink, reframe and replace the existing systems with sustainable, just and practical ways and means… if we (the human family) just have the imagination and will to make it happen. Economic systems are made up, not natural or immutable. Change is possible (however unlikely, says my cynical mind).
