An informal meetup with Srishti, Richa, SiddheshAyush.

I exactly remember the event “ Meet your peer buddy ” which gave me a direction to do new awesome things in my life. I believe you cannot plan to go to on the moon until you do not know about the moon.

“ Meet your peer buddy ” was the event which introduced me to moon along with stars. It was the first online hangout event for me to connect and learn from people who are doing the best in their field.

At that time I was a participant in the event and after two years I am one of the speakers in the informal meetup.

Why informal meetup ?
People are good to express themselves informally and this helped us to a lot to get participants’ mindsets about the problems they face.

Panel Topics

  • What approach do you take while learning a programming language ?
Learning is fun as well as a slow and ordered process. You have to start it step by step. Some important things are like collect resources, get some guidance, note important things and practice. MOOC is the best way to learn, implement a small demo project, Maintain your code on Github as notes, and make sticky notes of important things.
  • What is the best approach to make a good start with a project (android app/ java project /website etc)?
    1. Brainstorm your idea.
    2. Get it on paper. (Summary, Wireframes)
    3. Choose your technology stack.
    4. Read documentation so you’ll get to know about the scope of technology stack.
    5. Implement small modules and integrate them.
    6. Maintain a documentation.
  • How do I find a good project to work on ?
It is mostly related to your interest. Find open source projects on universities website, contribute to open source and find on github. Now a days every organisation keep their open projects on Github.
  • What’s your opinion on college certification programmes/training?
I do not think certifications in under graduation make any sense. These very expensive certificates can not claim your fluency in that respective area but some of your projects would be a great scope of claiming your commands on that.
  • What has been the significance of an internship in your college life?
Internship is very important phase of a degree program which gives you the practical exposure of the subjects. Internship also helps you to choose your futuristic profession and interests.

  • Some families do not allow girls to go for internship outside the city. How do we deal with a situation like?
In Indian Society there is a saying “ Girls must have to prove themselves”. So do great things. There are plenty opportunities in women in technology as well as Governments are also supporting the initiatives of gender equality. We’ve added many opportunities in the end of this blog post.
  • How to find meaningful connections with people via the social media channels?
Before making channel there are following things which everyone keep in mind:
    - Your social network profiles should show your interest and you’ve filled every profile entry very carefully.
    - Always post relevant things.
    - Visit conferences/events and make good connection with people.
    - Don’t spam.
  • How should I find time out of my busy college schedule to work on the projects or things that I am passionate about?
It is totally up to you , how you plan your day. Try to find time after college hours and make a good schedule.
  • Where do I look for meaningful resources/ or solve my doubts?
There are bunch of online social media groups and IRC channels where you can find people who can mentor you to solve the specific doubts. Always be open in communities.
  • What is one such platform or tool that you make use of for work?
I love to use google docs/sheets/calendar to plan and drafts things. You can also use a diary or sticky notes to increase your productivity.

A few quotes from event participants:

I’ve learned programming language while working on a project. Before that I had no idea what it was. It takes time, but can learn easily, thanks to online resources and documentation” — Tejaswi Kasarla

There are two ways of seeing, one is gsoc and one is open source contribution. if you are going for open source contribution, then choose your open source project which you current use, then gsoc is easiest. if you are aiming for gsoc, then pick one org of your language and start coding now, hunt for issues, be active on irc and submit a proposal” — Sagar
