Cholera is a bacterial infection that can lead to severe diarrhea and dehydration, potentially life-threatening if left untreated. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 1.3 million to 4.0 million reported cases of cholera and 21,000 to 143,000 deaths worldwide each year.

The main cause of cholera is the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, typically found in contaminated food, water, or surfaces. Poor hygiene, inadequate sanitation, and crowding in areas with inadequate waste management increase the risk of transmission.

Prevention is key in avoiding the spread of cholera. Some effective prevention strategies include drinking safe water, washing hands frequently with soap and clean water, properly disposing of human waste, avoiding undercooked or raw seafood, and ensuring food is stored and handled hygienically.

Additionally, oral cholera vaccines are available and have proven effective in preventing the disease. By understanding the causes and taking preventive measures, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of contracting cholera and help prevent outbreaks in their communities.
