Introduction:

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate as Israeli military operations intensify, bringing significant destruction and loss of life to the region. This blog post provides a comprehensive update on the current state of affairs, based on recent reports from our correspondent, Hany Mahmud, who is on the ground in Rafah, Southern Gaza.

Latest Developments:

Since October 7th, the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 22,800, with central and southern areas facing the brunt of the bombings. Last night’s attacks have been particularly devastating, with at least eight people killed and dozens injured. The frequency and intensity of the airstrikes and artillery fire are hindering emergency services, leaving many injured without timely medical aid.

The New Normal:

Residents describe a grim reality where people are killed in their homes, and the incessant bombardment makes rescue operations almost impossible. The area, especially the central region, has transformed into an aggressive war zone, with a significant portion of the population either displaced or living in constant fear.

Targeting of Safe Havens:

Alarmingly, even designated safe areas such as Darel B are not spared, with recent arrivals being targeted within hours. This indiscriminate targeting has led to a surge in casualties, overwhelming the already crippled medical facilities in the region.

Systematic Destruction:

The scope of destruction extends beyond residential areas, with systematic attacks on health facilities, schools, and other public infrastructures. This tactic not only causes immediate harm but also sets back Gaza’s economic and social progress by years. The rebuilding of the education sector alone is estimated to take a decade and require hundreds of millions of dollars.
