GSoC 2017: Final Report

All good things must come to an end.

Hi! Since we are at the end of Google Summer of Code ’17, I will be providing a brief overview of what I did during the summer as a fellow GSoCer!

My Project

LibreHealthEHR’s old PostNuke calendar was integral part of the application. However, the calendar was obsolescent, containing a plethora of bugs, and hence in dire need of replacement. My project, titled Practice Appointment Calendar for LibreHealth EHR, focused mainly on doing exactly that along with partial removal of the SMARTY template engine.

Over the summer, I completely replaced the old scheduling system with the new one, making sure that the new scheduler totally complies with the current database structure hereby eliminating the need for migration. I added new views to the calendar. I also rewrote and improved upon the search system and created a better administration view for the calendar. You can see one of the views of the new scheduling system on the left-hand side in the image below.

The new calendar interface.

Here are my pull requests submitted during the coding period:

  1. The monolithic PR pertaining to most of the changes: https://github.com/LibreHealthIO/LibreEHR/pull/611
  2. Another PR dealing with the administration part of the calendar: https://github.com/LibreHealthIO/LibreEHR/pull/667

Future Work

I’d like to involve myself further in the project, fixing bugs, implementing features, and helping newcomers wanting to contribute. Some of the functionality we are planning to implement after GSoC:

  • Appointment logs, so we can see who changed what.
  • Group Appointments, for multiple patients/providers.
  • A wait list for patients.
  • Custom ordering of providers.

A Final Word

I’m absolutely thrilled to have been given the opportunity to be a part of this adventure! I learned a lot: about coding, open source, and myself. I’d like to thank Google for creating this wonderful program, and lastly I’d like to thank all the mentors in my organisation for being ever helpful and patient with me. Terry Hill, Art Eaton, Tony McCormick, Robby O’Connor, Michael Downey, Judy Gichoya, and Saptarshi Purkayastha. Thank you all!

So long, and until next time!
