The thing about opinions

Thinking about opinions and how often we ask for them, how often we give them, and how often we toss them casually into the universe without bothering to see where they land.

We hear people say, “You have a right to your opinion” or “I have a right to my opinion”— usually as the last word in an unproductive conversation.

And passive aggressive though the quip may be, it’s accurate: we have the right to have opinions and even to share them. But that doesn’t mean we have the responsibility to share them. Let’s go ahead and free ourselves and each other from that burden.

Then, when the time comes to speak or act on our convictions, we’ll have a little extra moral and social capital to work with.
