The other technique is called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), and it often begins with a diamond seed made using HPHT. This seed is heated to roughly 800 degrees Celsius inside a tightly closed chamber. Carbon-rich gases are ionized into plasma inside the room. Due to broken molecular connections, pure carbon adheres to the diamond seed, slowly crystallizing into a pure carbon diamond.

Each lab-grown diamond is graded and certified using the same procedures as mined diamonds. Although the details may differ from lab to lab, most labs will grade the diamond using the 4 c’s: cut, clarity, color, and carat.
