I have been reading a lot about UBI lately but most articles I see do little to break down the math and explain in any detail how such a system would work in the context of the current American economy.

This article does a good job of explaining how known, proposed and existing, tax plans could be constructed to fund a UBI in a way that does not result in massive, unsustainable tax hikes for the average person.

I could see a plan like this underpinning a political platform. It’s a plan I can see Bernie and Trump (non racist) supporters getting behind. The economic dislocation that has already occurred and seems to only be accelerating as job automation (blue and white collar)moves from from distant future to near present demands that our social and tax policies evolve to serve the times we live in.

Sadly, I don’t see either major party in the US advocating any such system. Until the money in politics crisis is dealt with it will be difficult if not impossible to implement any progressive policies that benefit the many instead of just the few.
