Good design is holistic.

Characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.

This is an apt description of what design is and how it should be considered.

Design is the culmination of the hundreds of conscious and deliberate choices we make which effect each and every aspect of the artefact we are crafting.

In digital design we have Brand designers, Content strategists, User Experience designers, User Interface designers, Front-end developers, full-stack developers and many many more.

Design is not just any one of those things, design does not belong to any one of those professions; A beautiful UI design that’s unable to be developed to run smoothly and efficiently without eating into the users device battery life or worse, their celluar data plan, is a poor and ill conceived solution that we’d be better off without. A webpage that’s beaming with all the latest HTML5 semantic markup loses credit if a user is unable to easily scan the content to find what they’re looking for.

Design is holistic, it’s the culmination of each step in our process and it’s effect on all the others. It’s about diverse groups of people, each with their own expertise, working together and sharing each others knowledge in order to produce the best possible outcome.
