I’m really not very surprised. Religious figures are often stand-ins for mental health professionals but without the benefit of the same training or resources.

In truth, this is one of the bad sides of religion. Instead of turning to folks that are trained to handle their crisis they instead turn to folks who either don’t understand mental illness or don’t believe it is real.
