In Today’s Fast-paced World, it’s Quite Difficult to be Patient

Sadly I, amongst others, have found it burdensome in climbing the ladder of prestige considering the fact that we have profoundly undervalued the art of patience.

History is a witness to the fact that successful men and women who have accomplished significant achievement have good qualities and habits, they all executed along with patience.

A skill I wish I can fully acquire or master overnight, a safety valve against restlessness and intolerance of delays; anxiety and eagerness, a priceless trait worthy of wrecking or building us. societal manipulation, instant gratification and comparison today have made it cumbrous for us to exercise patience while working smart and hard on our various careers, goals, relationships, businesses and as well as our well-being.

It’s also marveling seeing our loved ones guilty of emboldening us to accomplish our goals within an unrealistic short span of time. This is often done out of decent intent, but from the other side of the coin impatience as well as distress ensues which often leads to devastating consequences.

Fortunately, we have been privileged to still have patient loved ones who we instinctively befriend, seeking the mechanism of attaining patience.

I remember vividly when I floated a start-up years ago. Filled with enthusiasm and hope, I reached out to a father figure telling him about my new accomplishment and seeking his advice and patronage. He chuckled and politely told me that it would be difficult and would “take a lot of time” to climb the ladder I was aspiring for considering my portfolio rather, I should search and apply for a good paying job and simple earn lots of cash. I wasn’t expecting such response but at the same time I wasn’t wholly disappointed as it is customary to ditch your ideas or passion and subscribe to the conventional secured employment figment; employment offers that you even barely come across. Trading your gradual speed of life for the rat race that eventually plunges you into insecurity, mediocracy and scarcity on the long run.

On the other hand, the fast-paced societal syndrome and eagerness to satisfy desires and lust has got some resolved in committing crimes like human trafficking, robbery, kidnapping, cybercrime, drug trafficking etc. Bartering patience, efforts and discipline for criminal acts to get the quick filthy dollar bills. Needless to say, lack of patience and integrity got some of us unfortunately agreeing to the notion that income is the outcome regardless of how it’s obtained.

In fact it will also amuse you to know that the same lack of patience and the fast-pace “live for the moment” culture is the cause of some ending up with incompatible Partners, marital disputes and divorces nowadays. The single ones aren’t left out of the syndrome as some are wantonly and eagerly searching for partners with little or no considerations while some of us are already debilitated and giving up.

However, we still all have a choice. A choice of jettisoning the sinking ship; the fast-paced lifestyle, the “live for the moment” culture, comparison and instant gratification, and reach out for the life jackets and rafts; patience. Having realized that success isn’t always paved and surrounded with roses, and grand accomplishments takes time to pan out. Probably within years, decades or maybe even a lifetime.

I have conclusively and passionately immersed myself in my craft, embarked on board the ship of perseverance, persistency and patience. Giving less concern to today’s reward while having it at the back of my mind that victory-land is my final destination.

I have also learnt that It’s never worth losing our patience over things (aspirations or emotions) that are out of our control at the moment. Everything that’s worth it will definitely take its time, but how long it takes doesn’t really matter as it is always worth it.

Patience can never be over emphasized for students seeking knowledge, when confronted with adversity, applicants seeking for jobs, establishing a business, searching for a compatible partner, raising a decent family, accomplishing any of our dream goals or even living the life itself.

“Patience is the very antidote to the stress of our fast-paced lifestyles. Patience is the ability to be calm in the face of disappointment, adversity or distress. Some people are more patient than others. But we can all work on it and improve — you can learn how to do better,” — Thomas Oppong, Founder at AllTopStartups.

No matter how great our talents or efforts, some things just take time. Developing patience to play the long game is the key to accomplishing significant achievement and making wonders.
