Promises

Perched in Humi’s rooftop we could see
the land beyond the rubble, the bricks and mortar
of our destroyed city;
we were fascinated by the mountains,
tall, large, snow covered giants,
beyond which laid a land where our fathers said
you can eat cakes and ice-creams in buckets!;
buckets!!and handful of cherries! maybe even more!
my father liked the grown up stuff,
like water and boots and large pieces of tin;
me and Humi, we were fascinated by the mountains
and the promises that it holds
for our city, for my dad, for Humi and me,
beyond the parched, cracked gate.
