The eye. The eye. The eye. The eye. Everything was black until I woke up out of breath, I was about to pass out. I quickly steadied myself and jumped out of bed. I started to ransack my own room looking for the eye. Where could it be? I questioned myself, making sure I didn’t just misplace it. It couldn’t possibly move, could it? No! I stopped myself. I just misplaced it. I continued to search, finding nothing other than wrappers and pens. Ugh, where could it be? Then I looked up and it was placed on a shelf staring back at me. It appeared to be… watching me! Wait, no, no this isn’t right. Out of shock and fear, I backed up, but I slipped on one of the wrappers, sending me to the floor. I stared up at the eye out of fear. I hadn’t put anything on that shelf in weeks, months, maybe even years.
But there it was, the eye that I had been looking for, the eye that I trashed my room for, the eye that was on my shelf watching me as I looked for it. The shelf I haven’t touched in months. I slowly closed my eyes as I got up and then I looked at the shelf. The eye was definitely there. I backed up getting into my bed. I brought the blanket over my body, then I looked up and started staring at the eye. I closed my eyes trying to fall asleep wishing this moment away. I heard something starting to roll. I got freaked out, trying to force my eyes shut so they wouldn’t open.
Sweat came rushing down my body. It was 3:00 am and I couldn’t handle this. I never believed in the horrors that the time 3:00 am could bring but I feel like I’m getting a taste of it now. It was too early, too early to be awake, too early for this crap to be happening, it was just too early. I’m used to sleeping until 11 or 12 even though it was normally broken. But the eye never did this before. I mean it was always creepy and always seemed to be watching me. But it never did this, it never played games like this. I couldn’t breathe again. What is happening!? No matter how much I asked questions I never got my answer. But I was only asking myself and complaining to myself knowing I didn’t know what was going on. Next thing I know I was falling asleep.
I woke up to Nate blasting music and coming into my room. “Babe!” I hear him call. I sit up looking at him while I rub my head. I have a headache for some reason. “Why so cheerful this morning?” I ask him while he looks around my room then he starts picking everything up. “Hm, I’m just in a good mood. But why is your room such a mess?” I lay back down hiding my body in my blanket trying to go back to sleep. “I was looking for something,” I said and closed my eyes. Nate climbs on top of me and plays with my hair “Wake up!” He says with a powerful joy you can hear in his voice. I twist and turn trying to get him off me “No!” I told him; I was annoyed. I sat up and he started climbing up on me more. He sits on my lap wrapping his arms around my neck and hiding his face in my chest. I looked up at the shelf, it wasn’t there. The eye has moved again. I looked at Nate, “The eye did you move it?” I asked him with a worried voice. “The eye? What are you talking about? I didn’t touch anything other than your laundry.” I stared at the shelf as I listened to him. I didn’t care to reply to him, I just stared and stared at that shelf thinking about how and where. I just lay there with Nate on top of me just thinking as music played in the background.
I never introduced myself properly. Well not at all. I’m Allen, yes Nate did call me babe and was on top of me cuddling. He was doing all that because he is my boyfriend. Anyways moving on, I am a 17-year-old Virgo who lives alone. Yes, I said Virgo, deal with it. Uh, I’ve been going off about this eye and you might be wondering why. Or what it means, what is it, blah blah blah. Well, I never had the best relationship with my father. You might be wondering what this has to do with anything. Just let me finish and maybe you would understand. I always hated my father cause all he wanted was power and would try to use me to get it. That’s enough for him to move on the eye, the eye is a small but not that small round glass eye. Surprise! It’s an eye! My father gave it to me. I swear it’s cursed. Every time I try to get rid of it, it keeps coming back. It freaks me out, but no one ever notices for some reason. It is always watching me. I can feel it, I know it’s watching me.
It’s been a couple of days and I haven’t seen the eye but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been looking. Right now, I’m sitting in the dark on my laptop staring at the screen. It was all the things I wrote about this eye. I have been writing about the eye and what I notice about it so I could be less confused even though it’s very confusing. One thing that I have noticed is that it shows up the most when there is fear like when I have my nightmares and when I wake up, I would most likely see it but when I do see it after a nightmare it’s in weird places or places it is barely ever in, to begin with.
While I’m focusing on what’s written on the screen, I hear the front door open. I get up grabbing my blade hiding behind the door, someone walks in, so I raise my arm, the person then turns on the light it was Nate, he looks at me and jumps, I put my arm down and we stare at each other for a minute. Then he sticks out his tongue and gasps “You were trying to kill me!!!” I put down the blade “No I wasn’t” I hissed at him. “Oh, really then what were you doing with the knife” he uttered. “I thought someone broke in, okay?” I told him. “I normally just come in and you know that so there was no reason for you to think that” he continued. “Yeah, yeah whatever,” I told him while closing the door. I walked over to my laptop and shut that too. I looked around then I noticed the eye was there on my nightstand watching us.
I backed up confused, I turned around and looked at Nate. “When I had the knife were you fearful or scared,” I asked him. “I mean yeah kind of, its normal to be scared when someone is basically threatening your life with a weapon, I mean normal emotion to feel,” he ranted. “I didn’t ask all that now” I mumbled. As I thought about it the eye must have shown up out of Nate’s fear. I walked up to the eye and grabbed it, throwing it at the wall. It was going across the room like a bullet. It was getting close to Nate’s face, but Nate backed up while it zoomed past his face coming close but missing it as it hit the wall hard.
Nate looks at me giving me a death stare. I quickly ran out of the room. “Hey!!! Why are you trying to kill me!?” He shouts also following me. I look at him as he raises his hand. “Wait, wait I’m sorry I didn’t mean to, please don’t kill me, I’m so sorry babe, love you” I plead as I raise my arms protecting my face.
“Fine,” he says while he puts his arms around me hugging me with my arm still up above my face.
I set my arm around Nate’s waist. I kiss his head and back up. As I backed up, I fell on the ground, I looked down looking for what I tripped on. My eyes widened. It was the eye; the eye was just there. “Babe!” I shouted with a frightened voice. “What!?” he asked quickly. I got up staring along with pointing at the eye. Do you see it!?” I questioned. Nate stares at me questioning my mental health, well internally, he looks down at the eye. “That thing,” he asks. “Yeah, that thing, you finally see it!” I’m glad I’m not the only one seeing things. I look up at Nate to see him picking up the eye and throwing it away. “Wait, no, no!!” I shouted. I got up and looked in the garbage. The garbage was empty. I just replaced the bag an hour ago and had not touched it since, but it was empty even though Nate just threw it in here but now it’s gone. “Babe! What the hell!” I sort of yelled at him, but I was annoyed- Nate started crying and getting upset. He’d never liked getting yelled at or the idea of someone being mad or upset at him. I crawled over him and cradled him in my arms. “I’m sorry, love, don’t cry, I’m not mad at you,” I told him. I tilted my head the other way to check the time. I froze out of shock. The eye had taken over the clock. The time wasn’t there anymore, it was just the eye.
I started to pass out. I began to become sleepy along with my eyes starting to drift shut. And then I passed out with Nate still on my lap. It seems like Nate didn’t mind me “sleeping” but an hour later I woke up to him screaming. “What’s wrong!?” I said loudly with fear in my voice. He pointed at this big round shadow, he was speechless, he was scared with no voice left in him. I looked at the eye, but it was bigger than normal, and it was the size of a bowling ball. I stood up and slowly walked towards it, but the eye began to shrink, and it continued to until it got back to its normal size. Once it was back small again, I picked it up and it was gone. My hand was empty. I hate it here. Why me? Why do I have to deal with this? I don’t have time or patience for such.
I stopped worrying and went to lay in bed with Nate. My mind started to drift away thinking about what could possibly be going on, then I stopped myself. To get my mind off the eye I switched mindsets and thought about Nate.
Nate is a very pretty feminine boy. He is also a soft boy. He is 16 and also his sign is a cancer. We met at a school football game but at the time we went to different schools which are the complete opposite. He went to north side which is supposed to be a really good private type of school and I went to the south side which is a very trashy area with a bunch of different gangs and drugs. Our schools are also enemies and there are always fights with the different students. But we kept in contact with each other then we started talking and gained feelings for each other. He asked me out the day after Thanksgiving. I was mad at him because he beat me to it. I and Nate barely ever fight and have the best relationship even though we like to pick on each other but it is really fun. He is also a cuddle bug; it is really nice, and he can make you feel so comfortable and cozy. It’s amazing and one of the warmest feelings you can ever feel. But along with all of this he is very sensitive and can get very upset at the smallest things or the thought of someone getting mad or upset with him. He is so lovely.
We both fall asleep together. When we’re sleeping Nate is on top of me cuddling it feels warm and cozy.
Everything in my mind goes blank and my heartbeat starts going faster and faster. All I see is the eye everywhere with my father in the middle and they are…- They are taking control over me… It felt like I was suffocating. They keep taking over more and more of my body. I didn’t know what to do. Next thing I know I was waking up in a fast motion, out of breath and scared. Nate woke up after he seemed scared. “What’s wrong!?” He asked quickly with a worried voice. I was overheating, I felt weird. I and Nate both noticed I was sweating. Nate turns on the lights then the fan. “Babe, what’s wrong?” He asked concerningly. “I just had a nightmare,” I said, trying to push off the question. I lay my head back down, “please turn the lights back off, I have a headache,” I told Nate. He did as I asked and climbed back on top of me. I kissed him on his head. After that, we went to bed.
We both woke up to a bang. It sounded like it came from the kitchen. I wanted to go check what happened, but Nate was still on top of me, and he didn’t want me to. I lifted him up putting him on the other side of the bed and went to go check anyway. He got up following behind me, but he wasn’t. I walked into the kitchen and then everything was black, I was falling, Nate was nowhere to be found. A couple of minutes later a shadow came into my sight. The shadow came closer and closer next thing I know it wasn’t a shadow anymore it was a human body that was clinging to me. I peered down at the person; it was Nate. It made me feel more comfortable knowing I’m not just on my own but I’m with someone I love. I just worry that this is going to be dangerous, and I don’t want Nate to be a part of that.
We eventually came to an end by falling out of a dark black tunnel. We landed in a building. It appears as if it was a school, and we were in a hall. I took a good glance around then looked at Nate who was still clinging to me. But he was looking around paying attention to everything. It was as if he was focusing on every little detail. I shook him, “what are you thinking about,” I asked stupidly. “What do you think I’m thinking about, I mean you were so curious you had to check about the bang and now we’re here, in a school building thing with no context on what’s going on, but you just had to ask me what I’m thinking about.” He said making it where you can hear the clear annoyance in his voice.
If I didn’t mention he also has a sassy sarcastic side. Yes, I do annoy him quite a bit. He got up and set about walking around finding his way. I got up and followed after him not wanting to be alone. While walking around this place began to look more familiar but I don’t know where from. I don’t even know what city or state or country or even world we’re in, but this all looks familiar. We have to be in the state for it to appear to be familiar. Nate peaked into each classroom, he seemed to be looking for something, but I don’t know what. We walked for a while.
The place looked endless for some reason even though it wasn’t. I saw a glimpse of a shadow; I scanned the area looking for the shadow. I didn’t see anything and then I saw something out of the corner of my eye. Since I didn’t know what it was, I took Nate’s hand and started looking for it. “Ah- where are you talking!?” He asked confused as he almost tripped. “I saw a shadow, but I don’t know what, so I want to find it,” I answered him. He looks me dead in the eye. “Wha-” He quickly cut me. “Ah yes we don’t know where we are so we’re going to follow a random shadow you saw, you are a very smart man,” he went off. He is very amused by my decisions, lately, I have been getting him quite annoyed to the point where he’ll be very sweet and nice to everyone else but me. I kind of find it funny, I never really see this side of him so it’s a new experience.
I continued to look for the shadow with Nate’s hand in mine. “I am very smart,” I said to him. “Oh, stop lying to yourself, it’s bad for your mind you know,” he tells me. I laughed and then came to a stop. I felt Nate let go of my hand and hid behind me. Half of the room was filled with light and the other was filled with darkness. In the darkness stood a tall dark shadow. I and Nate stand frozen in the light. The shadow started to take slow steps getting closer. The room was completely quiet until we heard a rolling sound. The rolling continued for a while as the shadow stayed in the darkness. Then the eye comes rolling out from the dark and hits my shoe. What the hell I thought to myself. The shadow presented itself. It was… My father!? No, no it can’t be. He held his fist slightly out and opened it, the eye was there. The eye was sitting in the middle of his palm. I looked down. The eye that hit my shoe was gone. It was in his hand. I couldn’t believe it; I couldn’t believe anything. I looked around and then I noticed the place looked familiar because this was not my father’s school. And of course, he would have something to do with the eye he was the one who gave it to me. I couldn’t believe it, but it was slowly starting to add up. But it’s all so confusing. I was speechless. I felt Nate shaking behind me. Nate doesn’t even know who my father is, I never spoke about him so he’s more scared and confused than I am.
“I see we have met again.” My father voiced with a smirk. We stay quiet. “Aw don’t pretend you don’t know me, I’m no one new, I haven’t been for the last 17 years.” He continued.
“Who is he? What does he mean by knowing you for 17 years? That’s impossible right?” I hear Nate ask in a soft small voice from behind me. “He’s my father, so it is possible,” I whispered to him.
“Aw come on, I just want to play a little game.” He sneered. He slowly clapped his hands together with the eye in the middle. And the eye has disappeared. “Now you need to go find the eye, cause if you don’t, well I guess I’ll leave that a surprise.” He laughs as a bunch of shadow people appear behind him. Th- they… Are real shadows… But they have weapons… “you better get to running,” he says then disappears himself. They… the shadow people started walking towards us… we started running away.
We ran in, locking the door, I barricaded the door while Nate searched every last little space in the room. These shadow things are shadows sort of like mist, but they have bodies. It’s like they are shadows but aren’t at the same time. I continued to stack things against the door. Bang! Bang! Bang! They’re trying to get in. Bang! Nate starts freaking out. Bang! The door was about to crack. Bang! “I couldn’t find anything,” Nate called. Bang! The door was almost down. Bang! Now all the bangs were gone as the room flooded with ghouls Nate scared ran behind me.
“Let them get to the back, at least the middle once they do make a run for, okay?” I instantly said what came to mind. “Okay,” Nate agreed. They slowly got to the middle; I couldn’t wait anymore. “On the count of three, okay?” I said to him, “Okay,” he agreed once again. The monstrous shadow creature was getting closer. “Okay.” “One…!” “Two...!” “Three!” We both started booking it and we went to another room. This time I locked the door and helped Nate go through things. Those things are getting pretty slow for our sake. We searched and searched but the eye was nowhere to be seen. I swear the eye was never this difficult to find.
Those creepy ghoul things are coming back. We decide to take the risk and run right past them getting very close. We made the decision to split up and search each room quickly and thoroughly. Both of us got to go through a couple of rooms without getting caught but we found nothing. It’s been a half-hour and we got one floor done out of three. While I was going through one of the rooms, I heard noises coming from the room Nate was in when I heard him scream. I started dashing to the area he was in. He was in the corner trying to get away from the shadows which were getting very close to him. I rushed to him pushing and hitting the monstrous creatures. It was working but part of my arm started to be like a shadowy mist just like how they were. I continued but the shadow parts only spread. Both of my arms were covered in the shadowy mist. But the shadow ghouls were gone. At least for now. I looked at Nate, he had tears rushing down his face. “It’s okay,” I told him. But it only made it worse. He started breaking down falling to the floor. “Are you okay? Are you hurt? Will this last forever?” He questions while crying. “I don’t know” was the only answer I had for him. “Let’s just continue looking,” I continued. Trying to ignore the fact the parts of my body were shadowed.
Nate got up wiping his tears. “Let’s go,” he said walking towards the doorway, I followed behind. As we got to the doorway, my father appeared out of nowhere. “I forgot to mention you two got a timer of four hours well it’s three now.” Then he just disappeared as if he was never there. I and Nate just looked at each other frozen, then we rushed to the second floor. We looked through each room. It had to be hours, but we were still empty-handed.
We went to the floor and looked and looked. We didn’t know how much time we had left. All we knew was that it wasn’t much. We continued to go through the rooms finding nothing with these stupid ghouls following us. The number of rooms is an odd number, so we met up at the last room. This room was more complicated, but we searched everywhere and every room. This was our last place. Our last chance. We couldn’t find anything. The ghouls kept getting closer and closer. Then he, my father, appears behind us and the ghouls disappear. “Times up” he snapped. Nate quickly held up his eyes and said, “found it!!!” He shouted. “Too late” He ends Nate’s spark of happiness. We stood there frozen thinking what was going to happen. The ghouls came back but we were too zoned-out to notice. Then they, the shadow ghouls started to consume our bodies, when we noticed it was too late. We were drowning in a black pit full of emptiness. We were nothing, all because we lost a game by a second.
