The main argument for net neutrality is over some odd worries about free speech….the fear that suddenly ISPs after 20+ years will suddenly start blocking small businesses and censoring blogs.

It’s such a bizarre argument. If ISPs where going to do so why wouldn’t they have done so already? Even if they were blocking content isn’t that their right? Part of free speech means that private people and companies can broadcast what they want doesn’t it? Why would an ISP suddenly decide to censor blogs for example? How would that earn them more money? Wouldn’t customers leave? Even if this fictitious horrible ISP started doing so….wouldn’t everyone just flock to the other ISPs who didn’t censor?

It’s so odd that this entire massive draconian invitation of government to be involved with the internet was predicated on a fear of something that never happened.

Couldn’t we have waited until the Internet was actually broken or had a problem before taking the horrible last resort step of inviting government to be involved?

Also EVEN IF there was a problem — is government really the best solution to a problem? What makes us think that these guys would help the Internet be better than it is today? The government does censor, lies and has become increasingly invasive and disrespectful of our rights.

The arguments to involve government in the internet more seem very illogical.

At the end of the day it’s a smoke screen driven by two types of companies: content providers and big online companies like Netflix and Amazon versus companies who provide bandwidth such as ISPs. Companies like Netflix are using massive amounts of bandwidth and ISPs would like to charge them for that — this would cost the content providers a lot of money so they have called it unfair and asked for government to be involved. That’s it. That’s what this is about: money, plain and simple. The questions people. should be asking is: What is the proper role of government? What is the moral right of the government to force someone else to do something? Who is the victim if this law is violated?
