GOSPEL AND SOCIAL JUSTICE ARE COMPATIBLE

by Babu G. Ranganathan (B.A. Bible/Biology)*

WE’RE NOT talking about substituting the Gospel for social justice. We can preach the Gospel AND fight for social justice (i.e. prison reform, etc.). The Christian can be involved in both, and fighting for social justice can provide a great opportunity to share the Gospel.

THE Christian abolitionists were involved in ending slavery and not just preaching the Gospel. It’s not an “either or” issue. Christians can be involved spiritually and temporally in the world so long as it is done for the glory of God.

Christians can fight for clean water and clean air even if these are just temporal issues as a demonstration that Christians care for the temporal welfare of people unconditionally, that is even if they don’t repent and turn to Christ for salvation. Scripture teaches that God “causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45).

Christians should not require repentance and acceptance of the Gospel from society as a prerequisite for providing relief to the temporal needs and requirements of society. Our love should be demonstrated to be unconditional. That glorifies God!
