I too have experienced that panicky feeling you describe while high. I’ve come to believe that it’s not so much about the weed as the way I’m breathing. Smoking causes me to occasionally begin breathing in a shallow manner– to unconsciously take short, rapid breaths. This kind of breathing creates a panicky response and negative ideation in virtually anyone: it’s the way one breathes when frightened. I’ve discovered that taking a moment to consciously and deliberately take a few deep breaths will dissipate the panic/fearfulness. This technique works for any situation in which one is anxious or fearful. It can work for students before a big test, patients at the doctor’s office, athletes before the big game… and non-smokers getting a little panicky from the occasional toke party.
