✨ Interview with Gameberry Studio

#01

Hi there!🖐️

I am Sang jun, a member of the Red Team at Gameberry Studio, serving as both a client developer and a PO. It’s a refreshing experience to conduct my interview with our new project “Hunter Raid : Idle RPG”

#02

Developed three projects with BACKND.

and is currently running two games and the other is a new project “Hunter Raid : Idle RPG”.

When we started our first project, we didn’t have an in-house backend developer and we wanted to create a server-based game. While the client developer was looking for ways to build and operate the game backend, they discovered BACKND, which not only handles data storage, but also provides various pre-built features applicable to games, such as leaderboards and guilds (clubs).

We found it very attractive because of the ability to use different features with simple function calls without having to build from scratch. The consistent updates of new features through regular maintenance by BACKND was very attractive. Above all, using their service so far has been very satisfying due to the active acceptance of feedback and the stable game backend.

Tell me more about “Hunter Raid : Idle RPG”

“Hunter Raid : Idle RPG” is a fantasy idle game that begins when an unidentified portal appears in the world where the protagonist lives. Monsters coming out of the portal invade the earth, destroying not only the modern earth, but also the past and the parallel world. The protagonist’s task is to cleanse all these worlds by becoming stronger.

We have five members — one client developer, two game designers and two artists — who developed “Hunter Raid : Idle RPG” in about five months. Since our team had worked together on two previous projects, we were already accustomed to each other’s working styles, and having a common goal of success allowed us to develop the game with passion in a short period of time.

Although it’s difficult to share specific achievements of “Hunter Raid : Idle RPG”, fortunately, with each new project starting from “Murim RPG”, we’ve been able to achieve more than three times the results.

✨ Manage game operations while developing new games

#04

It was the first time we tried to do both live operations and new game development at the same time.

Developing a new game while running an existing one is also a first for us. So we are in the process of learning by trial and error!

Managing more than two projects at once requires a tremendous amount of proactivity and accountability from people in every position. Most importantly, it requires all team members to unite around a single goal to make it happen. With an increasing number of projects to manage with limited staff, we emphasize resource prioritization and strong schedule management.

Gameberry Studio’s Success Formula for Idle Games!

I feel a bit shy because many developers have made games with better achievements and gameplay than us, but I will share our experience, which suggests that the success formula for the idle genre includes [Growth], [Marketing], and [Business Model]. Let me explain each one.

[GROWTH]

I think there were two reasons why idle games were able to succeed a few years ago. First, it’s a genre where players can grow without actively playing the game. Second, it can be integrated with various genres such as RPG, defense, clicker, etc. Players enjoy the satisfaction of growing over time without having to actively engage in the game. I believe the greatest joy comes from the satisfaction of character growth. Therefore, it is important to think about how to give players the joy of growth.

[Marketing]

When we developed Murim RPG, there were not many idle RPG games on the market. Now, not only in Korea, but all over the world, many idle games are released every month. As the competition becomes fiercer, users have more choices. In order to survive in the fierce competition, we must also take into consideration all the detailed parts and external parts of the game. To effectively attract users, both marketing strategies, assets and videos should be more attarative for better results.

#06

The business model is just as important as growth and marketing.

[Business Model]

The revenue model is as important as the game itself. In order to provide users with quality content and services on an ongoing basis, a good bottom line is essential. Sustainability requires performance.

Of course, it is necessary to avoid making money from the service for only a short period of time for fundraising. However, a rational business model could make the game more enjoyable for paying users. This satisfaction can become the driving force for players to continue playing the game and maintain the high retention rate.

The next chapter will cover “The importance of duration of content consumption and strategy to recover marketing costs
