Ironically my own preferences which reinforce the idea of content curating by ‘friends’ rather than editors are both outside of Facebook.

I’d change it to ‘people we know’ - I certainly value the curation of people I wouldn’t call a friend, but know well enough about to have a high regard for their judgement and opinions…

And two of the best tools for achieving that have been Google Reader, and Twitter. Sadly since Google Reader folded, the same community didn’t transfer over to replacement services, and the more features Twitter adds, the less effective it works as a way to keep up quickly and effectively…

Social Bookmarking tools also could have done the job, but never gained enough traction, so we’re left with the limitations of Facebook, and the collective wisdom of Reddit…
