I heard that Medium weights your claps depending on how much you usually clap, on average. For example, if ‘you’ make it a habit to give 10 claps, while ‘I’ usually clap only once per story, then Medium will give more weight to ‘my’ claps than to ‘yours’.

That would help to some extent, because people who sell “50 claps” on Fiverr will soon get their clap power demoted. Their 50’s would only count for another persons 10's.

Of course, there is always the possibility that people could clap once for most (random) posts, and then go the whole 50 for ones that promote their views. That would be a lot of hard work, though.
