A Short Summary Of Australian Government Climate Incentives So You Don’t Have To Read Their Website
As part of a deep dive into climate tech, I wanted to understand what the Australia Government does to incentivise climate tech start-ups.
Rebates For Installing Renewable Technology
If you’ve ever been annoyed by ads telling you that the government will pay you to install solar, its based on this rebate.
If you build a solar panel (or any renewable energy tech) on a house, you can get Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STC’s). These are worth ~$40 each, and depending on where you are you can get thousands of dollars worth. Heavy industry can buy these certificates to offset the carbon they use, and electricity generators are required to buy a certain amount per year. There are even Large-scale Technology Certificates for big projects too.
Climate technology isn’t just about renewables, so that’s where the next program comes in.
Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF)
Did you know there was a price on CO2 in Australia? I didn’t! ($16.94/T)
Several times a year the ERF holds an “Auction”. Auction players propose projects that they can deliver and “bid” a certain price per tonne of carbon. The ERF then chooses whether to take the “bid” and enters into a contract with the player. The auction terminology seems strange to me, as its more of a marketplace of project proposals.
If your climate tech start-up can provide evidence it will reduce CO2 emissions, then you can try using the ERF.
