Entrepreneurial Thinking is Fluid Thinking
It is no secret that I believe we should make the core foundation of education, entrepreneurial thinking.
Since leaving my job in 2007, I have been to so many networking events, seminars, conferences, courses and workshops, all of which have helped me grow my business as well as my own personal development.
What struck me very early on was that the information I was getting wasn’t the most beneficial aspect; it was the way people were thinking — their mindset and their attitude.
They were very fluid in their approach. When I talk about ‘they’, I am talking about entrepreneurs, business owners, anybody who I came across who wanted more from life than just earning enough to pay the bills.
My immediate thought was ‘why wasn’t I exposed to this earlier in my life?’ I was 37 when I left my job. Why wasn’t this approach to life given to me as a default in school, college and university?
When I got my first job as a Psychology Lecturer, there was a certain way of doing things, and things done in a certain way… “This is how we have always done it and it works” attitude.
My second job, the one I left to start my business, again had a certain way of doing things and was not very forward thinking in its approach.
Fluid Thinking has allowed me to have some fantastic opportunities in the last 9 years. Working with schools, dealing with corporates, connecting with some highly influential people via social media, speaking internationally, etc.
When you speak with entrepreneurs, whether they are running a small enterprise or a multi-national, the one thing they have in common is mindset.
- They have a fluid approach to life.
- They don’t look at their resources, they look at how resourceful they can become.
- They don’t see whom they can sell to; they see how they can add value.
They don’t think the world owes them a living, they see what they can give to the world first.
I ran a blab recently which talked about Why Teaching Entrepreneurial Skills is Essential in Schools, with Julian Hall and Mark Martin. We discussed how an entrepreneurial movement is needed in schools and education.
The school system is not fit for purpose. We are not preparing our young generation with the skills they need in today’s world.
What would be the impact if the education system allowed more creativity, more fluid thinking in the young?
It would develop confidence, the ability to believe that anything is possible, that you can do what you love and earn a living, as well as healthier, rounded individuals.
The current system doesn’t allow this. The current system is about attainment of grades. Grades DO NOT MATTER. There you go, I’ve said it.
The context is this, if you pursue a profession that requires you to study within a university, like medicine, engineering, science based or law for example, grades are important to get you admission.
But for the majority of professions, working in the ACTUAL profession, learning as you go, is much more beneficial. The role you do within that profession may not be exactly what you want to do, but being in the ENVIRONMENT is priceless.
Recently, a parent won a high court judgement for taking his child out of school term time for a holiday. The response from a spokesman from the Department of Education, said,
“It has been shown that every extra day of school missed can affect a pupil’s chance of gaining good GCSEs, which has a lasting effect on their life chances”
Again, to put this in context, yes it may affect grades, (I don’t believe it will if the attitude of the pupils and teachers is right and there is fluid thinking) but to say it has a lasting effect on their life chances is SIMPLY NOT TRUE.
You are not a grade; you are individuals who have dreams, intelligence, passion and a love to live the life you desire. Don’t squash their dreams before they reach adolescence.
All these people have TWO things in common, can you guess what?
Thomas Edison, Richard Branson, Benjamin Franklin, Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, Colonel Sanders (KFC), Charles Dickens, Elton John, Steve Jobs, Winston Churchill.
They are all…
- Hugely successful in their chosen field and…
- They all dropped out of or failed in formal education
We need to stop telling our children that if they fail exams and don’t get good grades, they will fail in life. This is just not true.
Why were the people mentioned above all successful?
Because of two things, the mindset they chose to adopt and their attitude towards life and failure.
Because believe me, all these people and many other successful people, have had more failures in their life than most people who just THINK about making their life better.
There is nothing special about these individuals. Their success stems from the right mindset, to taking massive action and creating the right environment with the right people.
This is what should be at the core of the education system. Encourage fluid thinking, creative thinking, that leads to individuals who love life and feel confident to pursue what they want to do without the stigma of what society and the system require you to do.
Ken Robinson sights in his Ted Talk “Bring on the Learning Revolution”, that the education system doesn’t need to be reformed, but that it needs a revolution.
My plan is to bring an entrepreneurial movement that encourages fluid thinking, & creativity in individuals who want to pursue what they love doing, in a system that focuses, at its core…

- How your thoughts create your world
The list could go on. The essence is this, teach our children to think, believe, respect and not be afraid of failure.
The time to have fluid thinking has never been more needed; the time to start an entrepreneurial movement in education is now.
