The Musher’s Apprentice — Day 6 — The Heat

Working outside in the interior of Alaska can be cold business. Winter temperatures can reach as low as -70 degrees. In the cold weather, it is the love of the dogs that keeps you warm. Also, several clothing layers, quality boots, gloves, and a good parka.

I work with a sixty-one-year-old man named George. He is a real sourdough. George came up to Alaska from Kansas with the Army when he was eighteen and he never left. George knows a lot about working in the cold.

What if you love the dogs, and you layer up, and you still are cold?

I will tell you what George told me.

“The heat is in the tools.”
