Earwigs will enter your brain through your ear or nose and kill you while you sleep?

Pest Control sometimes helps you understand various insects more closely and brings you closer to mother earth and since it involves a lot of information collection, we come across a lot of harmless creatures those people kill unnecessary like Honey Bee or some millipedes. It also provides us an opportunity to tell the world that the insects those were earlier considered deadly and dangerous are actually harmless and shy, irrespective of their feeding habits or the other kind of damage they may cause.
In this article we are discussing another such creature that was earlier notoriously famous for entering people’s heads through nose of ears and damaging the brain and so on and so forth, those were actually all myths and nothing.
Earwigs and the myths associated with them!
There are several myths about Earwigs and the stories have propagated through generations because of their shape and the pincers or forceps protruding from the abdomen. These pincers are used to capture prey for predaceous species, help in reproduction, and for defence but they do not cause any harm to the humans. Moreover there is another myth about them that they are dangerous and carries venom, so my friends these creatures does not possess any kind of venom whatsoever.

Then why these are so badly talked about and are considered really dangerous?
Earwigs are one of the most misunderstood insects. Many fear that they bite people. This is because of their intimidating pincers, or forceps, protruding from the abdomen, earwigs might appear to be a dangerous bug.
Old age journals implied that earwigs can burrow into the brain or at least into the ears and cause serious harm. This fear has caused this cryptic insect to develop a notorious reputation. Although even in the extreme cases, the large sized male can cause skin rupture in humans but that too very local and can be treated like a normal rash on skin or a scratch.
Why they are around humans?

They live around humans in search of food, they prefer moist conditions and eats on the leaves, decaying manure and seedlings from the plants and thus they are sometimes considered a serious garden pest and must be treated with a professional pest controller or garden treatment company. These can cause seedlings die and no further plantation may grow because the seedlings are eaten up in the ground and the gardener is waiting them germinate.
They live under the cover in moist ground soil, every stone in the garden may have a small family living under it, they are spotted when you turn the stone or a decorative and you see something shiny, small, creepy, with two forceps on the abdomen running fast in search of another cover.
These are small in size normally from 5 to 25 mm long, leathery wings and pincers of forceps protruding from the abdomen. These make them look intimidating and dangerous but these do not harm or spread any disease among other life forms. Earwigs are active at night. During the day they hide in cracks in damp areas. They live under rocks and logs and in mulch in flowerbeds.
Earwigs are attracted to lights. They can become a nuisance on porches and patios on summer evenings. In the morning they will be gathered under things like cushions that were left outside overnight. Earwigs move into homes to find food or because of a change in weather and once in home these may be found anywhere, sometimes even on the humans sleeping and people started making stories about these entering ears and damaging brains.
You can often find them in areas where there is water — kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries. Earwigs can also find their way into bedrooms and family rooms. As mentioned earlier as well they turn up in almost every part of the house, but infestations are rare.
How can you control them?

The most important part of controlling earwigs is eliminating their hiding places. If the earwig harbourages are not addressed, even insecticide application will probably not control earwigs very well.
There are a variety of things that can be done.
Move dumps away and create a “DRY ZONE” around the foundation of your home. The “dry zone” should be 6” to 12” wide so that earwigs will avoid it. Trim trees and shrubs that cause damp, shady areas near the house.
Keep it Dry, set drainage systems so that they water in the morning and allow the landscape to dry during the day.
Adjust outdoor lights to shine from the garden onto the house — insects will be attracted away from the house.
The best way to prevent earwigs is to utilize Integrated Pest Management, or IPM.
