The art and festival of the village provide a source of the joy for its people, offering them respite from their worries. These cultural events serve as a means of restoring happiness upon the community, alleviating their concern. They also serve as platforms for showcasing traditional talents, aesthetics and innovations of the accident tamil people, contributing to the contemporary appreciation and understanding of their heritage.

In the tamil culture there are many arts and folk. Which was produced and following till now.

Karakatam:

This is most important art in the Tamil culture.Which is one of the legacies in the Tamil culture of arts.They use to keep pot on their head.Where the pot is decorated with full of flowers,colour paper and shinning paper. The artist also wears shiny clothes to attract the people. Inside the pot they use to fill with sand or rice. And also place a stick like a parrot toy on the top of the pot. And they dance when the naiyandi drums, thavil and nadaswaram instruments are played. In this art both men and women are equally participated. Where men transform into women’s getup and dance karakattam. There is no rule for these many members who should be dancing the karakattam. Karakatam are mostly seen in Madhurai, Dindigul, Tanjur, and Tirunelveli.

Mayilattam:

This is known as a peacock dance in English. It is also important in the art of Tamil culture. They used to get into the getup of the peacock. Which was already made. Then they dance like peacock. And also imitate exactly like the peacock. When the instrument of Naiyaandi plays they use to dance. This mayilattam is mostly seen in the southern part of Tamil Nadu.

Kavadiyattam:

It is also the most important art and folk of Tamil culture. Their dance is also done in the festival’s times but also mainly focuses on the Lord Murugan. They dance on days of Bharani and Krithigai which is a special day of Lord Murugan. This dance is done with the stick which is made of bamboo and other woods. Which should have equal weight in both the ends. They decorate with the flowers etc.. To the stick. And they dance when the naiyaandi, thavil other instruments are played. It is also spiritual arts in the tamil culture. This art doesn’t take place only in India and also in Srilanka, Malaysia.

Poikakuthiraiyattam:

This is the oldest of art forms in Tamil culture. This showcases the skill of riding on a horse. They tie a wood with both legs and they wear a getup like a horse. And they imitate the movement of the horse. Here performers elevate themselves to higher levels of skill, often dressed in regal attire and may include acrobatic displays. Horses with elaborate decorations are ridden by skilled riders who demonstrate their control and coordination. This can be mostly seen in the centre part of the Tamil Nadu.

Thappatam:

It is also known as paraiyattam. Which is the traditional drumof Tamil Nadu. This instrument is made of the skin of the cow. And they fire it in the bonfire. When they play this instrument unknowingly everyone starts dancing. They also dance inside their mind also. This is popularly played in festivals, temples, marriages, deaths, awareness programs and advertising programs. It is the art of group performance. This can be mostly seen in all parts of the Tamil Nadu.

Puliyattam:

This is also the oldest form of art.They paint like tiger colour and imitate and dance according to the action which will be done by the tiger. They also paint like tiger colour to the whole body. And also they wear some getup of the tiger. Which is made up by the clothes. This art speaks about the bravery of the Tamil culture and Tamil people. This can be mostly in the centre parts of the Tamil Nadu.

Therukuthu:

It is also known as street plays in english. It is like drama happens at the end of the street and nearby the temple. Where they get up like king, queen, minister and joker. Where these four make the drama complete. They put hard makeup on their face and also wear weight dresses to look like the getup of kings. This is important and also the oldest folk in Tamil culture. They take some epic or ancient stories of India. They also take Tamil stories. And they perform. They don’t deliver dialogue. Instead of the dialogue they delivered by songs, some quotes. This also happens in the festival times and also in the rural markets.

These are some arts and folks of Tamil culture. These folks are broadly written in Tamil literature. Some of the folks are extinct. But some folks are still carried out by the families in Tamil Nadu. Where we should not let it go down. We should make it up. Where the government should take some steps to safeguard our folks and also bring awareness among the children about the folk. Folk is not just a culture. It is also the set of skills which should be learnt and known by all to provide to our next generation.
