Faith and Courage: Walking on Water
Daily Reflection —August 8, 2017
The Lord said to the disciples, "Take courage! It is I: don’t be afraid," when they saw Him walking on water through the storm. The disciples were afraid for they thought Jesus was a ghost.
I can say that this story of St. Matthew about Jesus is one of my favorites, and I’ve known this since I was a child. It’s one of the most popular acts that Jesus did: walking on water; defying what’s usual. This is a proof that Jesus was really the Son of God. This is also a story of faith and courage.
Moreover, it was also Jesus himself who taught His disciples, and us, to have faith and take courage: to walk on water with Him.
Just like the disciples, we were once afraid of something that is unusual for us. We were afraid that it may cause us something we don’t want. We are afraid of the circumstances. And just like Peter, when we are already walking on the water, we would stumble and fall, because we lose our faith. Of course it’s really, really, scary when you are walking on water, probably because it’s highly unusual and overwhelming for us to experience. Peter is understandable and relatable, because at some point in our lives, we were like Him: scared, afraid, and with little faith.
But one thing’s for sure: you are not alone. You shouldn’t be scared and afraid because you are not alone. Peter was with Jesus that time, so as you, and all of us. Jesus is with you, through your downfall and fall backs, even to your victories and successes . So we shouldn’t be scared of what lies ahead, because Jesus is always with you. This calls for us to have faith and take courage; take a big leap of faith especially to the things that scare you the most.
Lastly, if we took a big leap of faith, like walking on water, there’ll be much more to see; more of His wonders and graces. Be faithful, for we have a faithful God.
