Chicken Nuggets and Potatoes

We started with nothing

About a year ago, my wife made a trip to the grocery store by herself while I took care of our oldest daughter. Everything seemed fine, we knew exactly what we were going to get and exactly how much she was to spend.

When she got home, she walked in to the house without groceries. I immediately knew that something was wrong. Her eyes were puffy and I could tell she had been crying. I held her and asked if everything was ok. My first thought was that she might have gotten robbed or something of the sort.

I asked again if everything was ok and she began to tell me what happened. Our bi weekly budget was $100 for our family of 3. The reason that was our budget was because I only made $400 dollars per month.

She went on to tell me how she had all the groceries laid out at the register and started packing them and then it came time to pay and she realized that it was over budget and $100 is all that she had. She had to decide what she had to leave. This was something she really had to think about simply because we weren’t getting much and most of our groceries consisted of milk and baby foods since our daughter was 6 months old.

She decided to leave a bag of chicken nuggets and a bag of potatoes. She went on, paid and packed the groceries and as she was getting ready to leave the man that was in line behind her came up to her and handed her two bags. One of the bags had the chicken nuggets and the other the potatoes.

She was completely overwhelmed with the fact that the man behind her wanted to pay for what she couldn’t. She couldn’t believe that someone could care so much.

As he handed her the bags, he said I’ve been there. Glad I can help.

She told me that she couldn’t stop crying the entire way home. This was a very tuff time for us and we will never forget it. Today I have a well paying job and our bi weekly budget for groceries is $200 but we occasionally go over and now it’s ok because we can cover that too. We will forever be greatful for the man that cared enough to pay for our chicken nuggets and potatoes.
