Between Lakeshore walks, Christmas market at Distillery and the world-renowned latte artist at The Library Speciality Coffee, I’ve come to really love Toronto. But all that love feels lost when the clock strikes 5pm and we’re stuck in another Gardiner Expressway traffic jam and there’s literally nothing that can cure that frustration. No Drake song. No Knowledge Project Podcast. Not even morning mindfulness meditation. Nothing.

The unfortunate reality is that people just hate driving. Trust me- you can hear, see and feel that hatred on the roads everyday.

Can you blame them though? The average working Torontion takes 34 minutes to commute to their workplace and traffic congestion reaches 63% at rush hour and costs each household in the Greater Toronto Area $125 each year. Above all, these frustrating commutes deprive people of valuable time and studies show correlations between longer commute times and health problems like anxiety and depression. …

The development of automobiles started in 1885 when Karl Benz built the first practical automobile- later that same year, Karl took the same vehicle for a public test drive and drove it STRAIGHT into the wall.

140 years later, there have been substantial developments and iterations to the vehicle’s systems and manufacturing to introduce aspects like the bumpers and airbag system to mitigate the chances of these accidents from occurring. However, this approach failed in identifying and rectifying the least reliable component of the car and root-cause of these accidents- the driver.

There are 1.35 Million people that die annually from driving-related accidents worldwide which characterizes car accidents as the 8th leading cause of death for people around the world. The unfortunate reality of this situation is that this statistic stems from behavioural crashes. …
