Is the scientist Carl Sagan in hell?

Is the scientist Carl Sagan in the pit of hell? This is a question that I constantly ask myself when faced with those who dies without faith in Jesus.

Millions of life impacting sermons like these are preached about this weekly.

Carl Sagan was an eminent 20th-century scientist. He was the most well-known scientific “communicator” of the 20th century. Dr. Sagan had professorships at such prestigious universities as Harvard and Cornell.

There are other professed scientists who one can quickly dismiss such as Bill Nye. Some know him better as the ‘Science Guy’. I say dismiss only meaning to not to be taken seriously.

However, Dr. Sagan was by no means a ‘crack pot’ like Bill Nye. Before any space probe made it to Saturn’s moon, Titan, Dr. Sagan predicted that it was covered with methane filled lakes.

Dr. Sagan was proven right.

With that said, he also supported a theory he claimed were solid science, but couldn’t have been even by his own measure. One of these was the theory of evolution.

It is important to define something scientists say that anything considered truth must be measured against: the scientific theory.

The dictionary defines the scientific theory as a “coherent group of propositions formulated to explain a group of facts or phenomenon in the natural world and repeatedly confirmed through scientific processes and observation.”

The theory of evolution doesn’t meet the measure of solid science because it hasn’t been tested against this process. Within that theory of evolution, is another called The Big Bang Theory. Or perhaps evolution lives within the Big Bang.

This theory posits that everything in the visible universe began as an energetic singularity which exploded and created everything.

This event couldn’t stand up to the scientific theory because it can’t be observed, and much less tested. When lacking the ability to test scientific processes, scientist fall back on observational evidence only.

Although it would be folly to suggest that observational evidence isn’t science, it certainly doesn’t definitively prove either theory! Something science touts is the law of cause and effect.

These scientists use to make me righteously hostile for their summary dismissal of matters of faith. However, I conducted what they would call a thought experiment of my own.

It began with a question with respect to the Big Bang Theory.

For instance, they believe The Big Bang Theory, but have no idea where the energy singularity, which caused it originated.

Scientist, such as Neil Tyson, say this energy singularity was real, but fail to explain who, or what, brought that energy singularity into existence.

Why is a scientist being so un-scientific?

They want you to believe that something came from nothing, or put more directly; had no cause or one they can explain. If they are so in the dark about the cause, can error in results be so far away?

As Mr. Scrooge would say: “Bah Humbug!” This not only violates scientific theory and the law of cause and effect, it also shows a surprising leap of (gulp) FAITH!

The Bible describes faith as: “the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen”. Wouldn’t faith be the opposite of the scientific theory/process?

Let’s get to the question of where Dr. Carl Sagan, and more recently, Dr. Stephen Hawking, will spend eternity.

Although more Christians than I can count have cast these men’s souls into hell, I wouldn’t go that far.

Let me explain.

There is a two-letter word which determines not only their eternal destiny, but also the destiny of anyone who’s ever lived: if.

Having lived their lives disputing matters of faith, such men have done tremendous damage far beyond their own existence.

Dr. Ravi Zacharias is a well-known Christian apologist. He, and his ministry, travel all over the world. They mostly debate Theism in higher education forums.

Almost without exception, those who Dr. Ravi confronts with the truth of Scripture, invariably put forth the theory of evolution. Let me not confuse the reader with respect to who first put forth the theory of evolution: Satan!

Using his demonic power of suggestion, he recruited a man named Charles Darwin, an eminent 19th-century scientist. Those who Dr. Ravi and his associates witness to quote Darwin’s theory to prove that God is not real.

I digress. Back to the two-letter word ‘if’.

In a moment of total transparency, when I was first saved, I was what the Bible referred to as a novice in the faith. I took a legalistic approach to Scripture. This led me to believe that almost everybody was going to hell: except me of course.

However, and through the grace of Jesus Christ, I now understand that salvation is a gift which we cannot work for. Scripture says: “it is by faith that you are saying; it is a free gift of God and not of works lest any should boast”.

Although science has poisoned the minds of millions, that isn’t why they, or anyone, would end up in hell.

All who inhabit hell are there for one reason: they didn’t accept the gift of salvation, offered through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Having lived their lives believing that there is no God, it is difficult to believe, at the end, they would change their minds.

However, it is not impossible!

So, we are back to the original question: is Dr. Carl Sagan in hell? According to Scripture, if he didn’t accept Jesus Christ as Savior, YES. Both he and Dr. Hawking are burning, and screaming alive forever in the lake of fire.

However, Jesus died for their sins, even on their deathbeds, they are in the arms of the Lord.
