“What’s The Worst Thing You’ve Seen In The ER?”

The MVA’s.!!!!

You know the ones which include drunk drivers who present with minor lacs? They reek of alcohol. Little fuzzy in the head. That’s about it. Let’s wait for the blood alcohol levels.

The pool starts.

“I will guess 1.5. In for $1.00. “

You listen to the EMT’S describe his car, looking like an accordion…

“I don’t know how he survived. He should have been dead.”

In the next trauma room is a dead baby whose car seat was ripped apart by the impact. Her little body is barely recognizable through the blood and the bruises and twisted limbs.

And the tubes. And the mess all around the room, the empty packages of 4x4’s, IV tubing, bags of saline ….ET tubes.

You realize this was once a baby because in the next room you can hear her mother screaming for her daughter. The broken bones and head injuries she has sustained, the multiple wounds will require months, if not years of physical therapy.

The excruciating pain from these physical injuries will pale in comparison, will be forever overshadowed by the eternal grief over the death of her child.

And you think….WTF???? And you begin to feel again. And the feeling is one of great sorrow for the mother, for all of people who have ever been injured because someone decided to have just “one more beer,” “ just one more margarita.”

The feeling of sorrow turns to OUTRAGE, unadulterated heated outrage!!!!

How many more lives will be lost in this manner? How many more gun shot wounds, stabbings, beaten bodies, starving children with lice, bruises, broken bones rotten teeth??????

It never stops!!! NEVER!!!

I’m done. I can’t save the world.

I am going to save myself.
