This song was birthed into existence by a man who I am now convinced is some kind of Pied Piper sorcerer. If you haven’t listened to “Tiimmy Turner” by Desiigner yet, you’re still in the right place. Just follow the beat.
About a month ago, the aforementioned 19 year old rapper (Panda…Panda Panda Panda Panda Panda) dropped his 2016 XXL Freshman freestyle, “Tiimmy Turner”, as part of the magazine’s feature. Below is the accompanying video:
It’s an oddly poignant yet enticing slice of music. He manages to intone this haunting lullaby that a father like Al Pacino’s John Milton has playing on repeat for his children in the middle of the night. The internet got a hold of the video (somehow), and “Tiimmy Turner” quickly gained traction. The interest and buzz it created, both good and bad, prompted Desiigner to begin production on a ‘Tiimmy Turner’ single, and he brought us along for the journey.
Before this past weekend, the real Timmy Turner made himself known:
I am still vibing hard with this song. I really can’t understand the words without looking up lyrics, but I don’t care because the selling point here is something better. I am excited because this music surprised me. Get off my lawn, but too many things sound alike nowadays.
When an artist finds a way to stand out, it’s remarkable. The 30 second freestyle gave us the raw but extremely intriguing core of “Tiimmy Turner”. The single goes on to fully embrace the darkness of the original, but jacks up the melancholy to dangerous levels. It’s compelling because it’s so odd and gothic. I didn’t want to stop listening. Yet, with all that said, Desiigner managed to introduce something far, far better in the finale.
Ok, so I hope by now you’ve listened to the entire song, and if not… I mean come on dude it’s only 4 minutes. Live a little bit.
Finished the song?
Seriously, all 4 minutes.
Great, now you know I’m talking about the key change at 2:51, right?
The closing quarter of this song has the hook on repeat, but suddenly it’s backed by a nigh celestial composition. I genuinely believe that if you are a human with emotions, you will feel something when the shift happens. He takes us through an opening trudge of gloom, and then reveals this blissful light at the end of the ear canal.
As the song ended and I fumbled my laptop trying to start it over (and continued to repeat for nearly a day), the entire experience of listening to “Tiimmy Turner” changed for me. Now, I happily and willfully bob my head along through the opening darkness because I know it’s part of a much more impactful and elating ensemble. Plus, the song shares its name with a Nickelodeon character. Kids these days.
