Honda City is back, but it has more in common with Civic, just like its predecessors. However, the new Civic roots have their own advantages. The new City is a traditional sedan, not some wedge hybrid hatchback. It looks like a “normal car,” Honda believes will make City more attractive. The city uses a small version of Honda’s third-generation dual-motor hybrid system. It uses a compact 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine that produces 107 horsepower and 99 pound-feet of torque. But this engine does not actually drive the wheel most of the time. In contrast, the 1.5-liter mill primarily spins a small motor-generator that charges City’s 60-cell lithium-ion battery pack and charges the second, larger 129-horsepower electric propulsion motor, sending 197 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels.

A “locking clutch” can be engaged to transmit torque directly from the gasoline engine to the driven wheel, but can only be mixed at full speed or at full throttle during high-speed cruising. When working together, the total system output is 151 horsepower and the torque is 197 pounds, which is no different from the propulsion motor itself. Because the gasoline engine is not connected to the wheel, the drive has a strange effect similar to CVT. You step on the accelerator pedal and hear the engine speed, but it is out of sync with the acceleration. The note is just a little crawling and then hangs uncoordinated. However, electric motors are more reactive than conventional continuously variable transmissions.

Like an electric car, Honda City 2019 tends to lose power when driving at high speeds, in which case it may feel underpowered. Overall, City has achieved solid performance — especially at the city speed where the motor is at its core. More importantly, it promises the same fuel economy as the best in its class. The city has four drive modes: normal, sports, economic and electric. There is no difference between Normal and Econ — the default settings have been adjusted very environmentally — the EV has limited use outside the parking lot and driveway because of City’s small battery pack. The sports environment has a good run-in response to the throttle, but there is a fuel economy cost. The sports mode also transmits electronically generated artificial engine noise to the cab during acceleration, which only draws attention to the above sounds. This “enhanced” feeling of sound is completely unnecessary.
