Kangaroo
Honey, I won’t take long. I’m just going into town to pick up a few things.
Are you Ok? You can use the GPS on the phone. And you’re right with the parking?
Of course I’m ok with the parking!
The parking is different up here. You have to back it in … rear to the curve.
I said I am OK.
Give me a call if you have any trouble
OK honey. I just want to get some laundry powder, do you need anything?
No, that’s OK.
I am busy watching a wildlife documentary.. its about kangaroos. They are an amazing creature. They are constantly on the move, rotating between areas of abundance. They graze on a range of grasses, even some bark to give diversity to their diet but also to protect the vegetation so that it regenerates quickly and can be grazed again.
When the land dries they expand their range. They will move further and eat less to protect their food sources. When they are under threat they take flight. Most of the mob will take off in the one direction, away from the threat while the fittest and strongest of the bucks break out in different directions. They understand that predators will follow them and that they stand the best chance of defending themselves.
These same bucks (the ones who are prepared to sacrifice their lives for the mob) may never get the chance to breed. The dominant buck has sole breeding rights to the Does of the mob. If the younger or weaker bucks cannot defeat the dominant buck after a few attempts they are exiled by the mob. They live alone. They can attempt to join another mobs but the chances of reintegration are roughly 15%. They will survive on average between 4 and six months.
They lose their role. There is no longer anyone to protect. They eat less and lose condition. They actually become depressed and are then easy targets for predators.
Its getting late, I am worried about her, I text to see if she is ok…no response. After 10 minutes and another text, no response.. I call.
Hi baby, how are you?
I’m OK…why didn’t you answer the texts?
Sorry baby… I had the phone on mute for some reason, it just resets itself and I never know.
Did you get what you were looking for?
Yes baby I got everything I needed. I love it here, everything is so handy. You always have the ocean in view, it’s a beautiful place.. I just feel right here. We’re going to come back here, tell me we are going to come back.
Sure honey we’ll come back. How did you go with the parking?
Great.
Was it OK?
To be honest it was harder than I thought. I just wasn’t used to it.
But you parked ok… nothing happened?
Honey I needed to get someone to help me. I’m not used to driving the car here, and I can never tell where the bumper bar is. These carparks are very tight. I was having some trouble – there was a lot of traffic.
There was a guy on the footpath. He could tell I was having some trouble so he offered to help me.
What did he look like?
He looked OK I guess.
How old was he.
I guess he was young, a few years younger than you.
Tall?
A little taller than you.
But he was just helping me with the parking. He was very nice, very polite honey.
After he parked the car he gave me his card. He even asked me out to a party later. Can you believe that, a party.
They lose their role. There is no longer anyone to protect. They eat less and lose condition. They actually become depressed and are then easy targets for predators.
I really love this place honey. Tell me we are coming back, we’ll come back in the summer when the weather is better.
