The Battery
…so I am driving back to Bullengarook and notice a car battery in the middle of the road and I am thinking — someone is going to hit that thing and have a crash… and then I am thinking if I don’t move that battery whoever has that crash, whoever is involved and whatever happens to them will be all my fault. I pull a u turn, pullover, wack on the hazard lights and dash out into the middle of the road to retrieve the battery.
Bingo — good looking battery…looks unused, the terminals still have caps on them…backup I am thinking, for the electric fence, keep the horses under control. I am happy.. I have done a good thing and I have profited from it…it’s rare in this life..
I throttle home and get the battery out.. it has leaked over the floor, I had anticipated this by making sure I stuck it on a rubber mat but it has leaked over that and onto the carpet. There’s a funny smell…the carpet is burning.. in my mad rush to get the battery out I have also brushed my down jacket onto the floor of the car… I have now stuffed the carpet in my car and the jacket… the gods gave me somewhere between 30 and 45 seconds to congratulate myself on my community mindedness but the gods are not just… I am going to take that battery back out onto Gisborne road and place it back where I found it.. see how the gods go with that…
