24 Hours With Mighty In Jakarta

Last year, I pleged to support the Mighty audio player, which aspired to be “the iPod Shuffle for the streaming generation”. I thought it was an interesting concept, and I had yet to find a replacement for my dead iPod Shuffle, and had already been using Spotify more than iTunes/Apple Music. So I pledged for one unit, awaiting the promised November 2016 shipping time.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t meet the promised shipping time due to various issues around production and licensing, but I do commend them in pushing forth towards completion, in light of the fact many other Kickstarter-backed ventures had collapsed. Long story short, they overcame their production issues, got certified by Spotify as their streaming service partner, and finally shipped to backers in June 2017, also rolling out a proper website.

My unit arrived early July, which was unfortunately a defective unit. I reached out to the company’s closed Facebook group for help, and they quickly followed up to assess the device, and eventually sending me a replacement device. This is the device that arrived yesterday evening and am currently testing.

In the package was the Mighty unit itself, a special charging cable, and an instruction leaflet.

Finally, Mighty!

You also had to download an app (available on iTunes and Google Play) that manages your Mighty, for syncing apps, doing software updates and most of what you’d expect for a companion app.

Still syncing. Now I can listen to the playlists my band is supposed to play.

Syncing took a while (it’s dependent on your internet connection, and Jakarta internet speeds are nothing to write home about), and I synced around 500 songs to the unit (I think).

note the crappy old iPhone earphones to the top left.

I’ll be testing the Mighty with some leftover iPhone earphones (the iPhone has since gone kaput), and a pair of Marshall Mode EQ earphones. I don’t have any Bluetooth headphones (as I can’t be bothered with yet another device I need to charge) so I will be testing with a Bluetooth speaker at home.

So far audio quality using wired headphones is as to be expected, which is a good thing. Unfortunately there is no shuffle mode, which is something that the Mighty team is working on. But so far, I’m happy with my Mighty, and can’t wait to go cycling with this thing.
