There are thousands of thousands of simple UTM builders out there, however, only a handful of them can bulk generate UTMs.

In this short article, I’ll show you how to use Google Spreadsheet to generate even 1000 UTMs without hassle and mistakes.

What You Will Need

  • Google Account

Disclaimer: I won’t cover the UTM campaign basics here. There are numerous reasons why you should consider learning about using UTMs. If you’re new to the topic, you can start with Neil Patel’s UTM breakdown. It’s fair enough for newcomers.

UTM Campaign Generator Tools

With around 1,160,000 search terms for the UTM Builder query in Google, there is a to choose from. You can go with tools like Google’s Campaign URL Builder, UTM Builder by LiveChat (which has some additional features), or Piwik PRO URL Builder Tool, just to name a few.

However, if you’re using a UTM daily, there’s a chance that you’re generating more than one campaign at a time.

Let’s say you have a newsletter coming with new posts from your blog. Each button, picture, and even short sentence in the paragraph have a UTM campaign URL.

I mean, yes you can generate 1000 UTMs with PiwikPRO or LiveChat UTM Builders. However, it’s a tedious job to do. It takes time, and you can make a lot of mistakes like dreaded inconsistencies (lowercase, numbers, hyphens — it all can go wrong).

Bulk UTM Tagging, It’s Not Rocket Science

To bulk generate UTMs for your campaign we’re going to use Google Spreadsheet with a formula that automatically adds chosen UTM parameters to your URL.

I made a ready template, copy it and customize it for yourself.

Working with Template

Working with this spreadsheet is a piece of cake. All it takes is just fill the cells with desired data.

The Source, Medium, and Campaign Name fields are mandatory. If you want you can change the formula to exclude these fields. It’s a good practice to include them in your UTM campaigns, though.

If you use particular medium and source parameters on a daily basis you can modify the data in the sheet. Here’s how to do that:

Add custom source and medium parameters to Google Spreadsheet

That’s all. Right now you can easily generate tons of UTMs for your campaigns across the internet. If you have any comments or problems with the Spreadsheet just let me know here or send me a message.
