So happy to see a like-minded developer! I believe there is a chance to make a difference by innovating the way developers collaborate and produce software. We are working on a new model to dissolve the dichotomy of open-source and corporate development, which hopefully could blur the boundary between “hobby coding” and “coding for work”. May I refer you to our article Beyond the Dichotomy of Open-Source and Corporate Worlds?
In addition, I think a favorable factor that contributes to your “landing pad” is that you own a farm and a house. Our idea is to turn code into development “real estate”. In our model, contributors of a project own project shareholdings. Even if they quit their jobs, their virtual shareholdings can continue to generate some income for them if the projects are profitable. Overall, developers can enjoy more freedom to work for what they love.
We are researchers and developers and trying to figure out how to spread the story to the world. We sincerely hope to learn from your experiences (or even get some help from you if you like).
