Futon vs Sofa Bed
Made to serve different functions, the main feature of both sofa beds and futons is to save space in your room. Both these models are ideal and functional solution for small apartments. But what is better, the futon or the sofa bed?
What’s the difference between them? What are the pros and cons of futons and sofa sleepers?
When selecting this piece of furniture you should pay attention to several important criteria.
At first sight, sofa beds look like an ordinary sofa or a standard couch. They include a changeable mechanism that allows turning sofa into a bed if required. The convertible sleeper features seat cushions and a foldable mattress that is attached to a framework. For sleeping option simply move the cushions and pull out the mattress and/or frame. The convenience level of an attached mattress is fixed and invariable by the manufacturer.
A futon frame (sometimes sold with the mattress) also plays the role of bed & sofa. It converts from a sitting position to bed-like construction. A transformation is available due to a conversion mechanism that’s built into the frame. Choose the desired level of comfort as you have the option to select the mattress and cover you need. The mattresses can be firm, plush or soft and available in various sizes, from twin, and full to queen, and even custom sizes. Futon doesn’t look similar to a standard sofa, as it usually has a wooden or metal appearance covered with the mattress.
Sofa beds come in a variety of designs, so you are free to choose what you want according to your room’s interior. Futons have limited design styles of wooden or metal frames and a folding mattress — it’s more ascetic-looking piece of furniture that will be ideal for minimalist spaces.
The futon is an excellent choice if your room’s space is small, as it includes a slender framework with a foldable mattress without taking much valuable space. Sofa sleepers are bigger in size, but they are more comfortable due to their construction, upholstery and foam padding.
Futon frames are relatively light-weighted, less massive and usually easier to move than sofa beds. The converting mechanisms are also easier to use.
Concerning the price, sofa bed is more expensive than a futon.
In the chart below I compare the pro’s & con’s of futons & sofa beds to infer what will work best.
