Gorillas

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda is home to over half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are only about 1,063 mountain gorillas remaining in the wild, 400 of those living in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The gorillas are faced with constant threats to their survival, including habitat loss, poaching, and disease. The forest is under pressure from human population growth and agriculture.

Conservation efforts are underway to protect these gorillas and their habitat. Cue Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka:

A Ugandan veterinarian and conservationist, Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka is known for her work protecting mountain gorillas and other wildlife in Uganda. She is the founder and CEO of Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), an NGO that aims to conserve gorillas and other primates by improving the health and livelihoods of communities living near protected areas.

Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka launched Gorilla Conservation Coffee, an organization that pays a premium of $0.50 per kilo above the market price to coffee farmers living next door to the gorillas around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Gorilla Conservation Coffee further supports the farmers through training in sustainable coffee farming and processing. This helps to improve the coffee quality and increase production yield. Supporting local farmers helps to protect the critically endangered gorillas and their fragile habitat.

Coffee

Organic

The coffee is certified organic, which means that it is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can harm the forest and its inhabitants. Additionally, the farmers are committed to providing fair wages to their workers and investing in the local community.

Fruity & Floral Notes

The coffee itself is an Arabica variety, delicate in flavor and bright acidity. It’s grown under the shade of the forest resulting in the beans developing a distinctly fruity and floral flavor, with notes of cherry, blueberry, and black currant. The beans are handpicked, sun-dried, and then processed to ensure the highest quality.
