Early Life and High School Career

Lawrence "Larry" Joe Bird was born on December 7, 1956, in West Baden Springs, Indiana. Bird was the fourth of six children in a working-class family. Bird played basketball for Springs Valley High School in nearby French Lick, Indiana, where he quickly made a name for himself as a remarkable player, averaging 31 points, 21 rebounds, and 4 assists per game in his senior year.

He left the university after 24 days and returned home. After a brief hiatus from basketball, Bird attended Northwood Institute, a junior college in Michigan, before transferring to Indiana State University in 1975.
