Here’s what we’ve learned about BattleFlys so far:

  • Players release their BattleFly from a cocoon, starting a two week Season 1 lifespan.
  • The BattleFly then has two weeks to maximize its ROI by salvaging Mods in the Garden, accumulating the strongest load-out it can, and competing head to head with other BattleFlys in the Hyperdome.
  • High performing BattleFlys will generate an awesome return of 5% daily (averaging over 40% per week!), but there are losers in this game and a low-performing BattleFly will see 10% of their $Magic stake evaporate every day.
  • Two weeks after their cocoon release, BattleFlys will progress to The Rift, where they await entry into the broader Treasure metaverses from Season 2.

In this post, we’ll shed some light on our broader vision for BattleFlys, their utility beyond Season 1, and how we see them playing a useful role for both players and creators in the Treasure metaverses.

The Silo, where Ancient AI creates and deploys BattleFlys into the metaverse

Firstly, some context — in the first few weeks of $Magic’s conception, the founders coined the term “Proof of Imagination” to describe the core energy source that would power the Treasure metaverse. Their concept of building a community connected primarily by imagination was intoxicating, and the polar opposite of Facebook’s promotion of a sanitized, corporatised metaverse released around the same time.

BattleFly seeks to complement the founders’ vision by adding Proof of Consequence to the Treasure metaverse. Over the course of its Season 1 lifespan, a BattleFly will fight up to 140 battles. Zooming out, this means that over the coming weeks, tens of thousands of BattleFlys — maybe more — will compete in millions of battles. From these battles, each BattleFly NFT will record three distinct achievements to complement its genesis traits:

  1. A load-out of BattleMods — unique combinations of weapons, shields and utilities selected from randomized loot drops, and
  2. A ROI ranking, based on $Magic it has claimed or lost over it’s first two weeks, both of which contribute to
  3. An overall ranking score, based on its performance and endurance in the Hyperdome over it’s season 1 lifespan; and

In essence, unlike most NFT projects the “rarity” of a BattleFly is not wholly prescribed in the genesis cocoon — rather rarity is achieved as a result of the strategic gameplay of its owner and determined after the first fortnight.

This is exciting and flips GameFi on its head — a BattleFly doesn’t outperform simply because it is ‘born rare’, rather it becomes rare because of its outperformance. We think this could be revolutionary.

This is Proof of Consequence, and we think it delivers a new level of utility for the metaverse. If Treasure was a game of chess, the Legions are your back row of the board. Because they are valuable, powerful and scarce, we anticipate that players will avoid scenarios that might risk their ownership or existence of a legion. Every metaverse to date has been missing pawns — a massive scale of soldiers that can be flung into battle, into building, strategy and defense. The BattleFlys are that army — consumable, battle-tested soldiers for the metaverse.

Let’s use the example of a new metaverse land release. Traditionally, NFT land distribution has relied on two fairly rudimentary launch mechanics: exclusivity (whitelisting, first into Discord, grindiest shilling) or auction (who is prepared to speculate the most). Both mechanics result in fairly arbitrary outcomes and as a result most metaverse land sits un-used in the wallets of speculators. The conquerors move on.

Using Treasure and BattleFly, legion generals and guilds will soon be able to call upon armies of BattleFly soldiers to conquer new lands. Wallet holders who own the BattleFly soldiers will determine which faction or guild to align behind. The legions and the BattleFly soldiers will fight it out, to determine who seizes the new assets … and then, the winner needs to figure out how to defend them.

We think that Proof of Consequence is an inherently fairer and more versatile tool for determining the outcome of a conflict than RNG or pay to play. We also think that it could be fun for BattleFly to hunt for under-utilized resources and seize them on behalf of guilds that are looking to expand. As $Magic emissions start to dramatically reduce, and the competition for resources becomes more pronounced, we believe the connected metaverses will benefit from the scale and uniqueness of BattleFly armies. We also think it will make individual wallet holders more important and useful to their guilds, as the size and ranking of their BattleFly squads will have strategic benefits in both defense and expansion.

We envisage that in the future, guilds will use armies of BattleFlys to defend harvesters from opponents, or form broad alliances to help shift the outcome of a quest. But as a composable resource within the Treasure eco-system, the utility of Proof of Consequence will only be constrained by our collective imagination.

Season 1 of BattleFly starts off as a micro-game, with individual BattleFlys competing head to head. From these battles, vast armies and alliances will be formed. We can’t wait to see how these play out at scale from Season 2 onwards — more about this in Part V — A trustless army.
