Kuch to Logos Kahenge!!

  1. Remember Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer? Its lions are more badass than you can imagine!

The MGM logo attained mythical status. Though not as widespread and famous as the Disney or Apple, it is one of most eye catching logos. C’mon! It has got a freaking roarin’ lion in it.

The logos have undergone several changes, with the lion dying for, like, four times. Nevertheless, they have their own share of exploits. The first lion, Slats, was buried beneath a huge marble slab. When asked about the reason, his trainer replied: “to hold down the lion’s spirit”!

The second lion was, kind of, a survivor: a train crash, a plane crash, boat crash, explosion, an earthquake, and yet another train crash! Phew! Well, there’s more: he even adopted a bunch of kittens.

2. The too-much-risqué logo of Starbucks

Unless you are living under a rock, you must have, at least remotely, heard about Starbucks. Apart from creating holes in our pockets with the over-priced coffee, the original Starbucks logo also has an interesting story.

Well, the original Starbucks logo, from which the subsequent logos have been created, was a lady with her breasts uncovered. No prizes for guessing, every logo since, had her breasts covered with hair or out of shot. The coffeehouse giant is so scared of offending its customers, that in 2008, when the company released limited edition cups sporting the original logo, they edited it, so that the woman is not absolutely topless. *Sigh* People still complained!

3. Toyota: The Circles and The Ellipses

You see the ellipses in the logo? Can you count how many are there?

Well, there are three of them. These three ellipses represent three hearts: the heart of the customer, the heart of the product and the heart of the progress in the field of technology.

4. The Big ol’ McDonalds!

The list will be very incomplete without mentioning McDonalds! Well, this is one brand that has the potential to outlive the entire humanity. (Who knows? May be, the next species to inhabit earth will end up dining at McDonalds!)

Many assume (at least I did), that the ‘M’ that forms the Golden Arches of the McDonalds was because of the first letter in the word. Actually, the Golden Arches are based on the shape of the original McDonald’s, which featured prominent golden archways. The architect Stanley Meston proposed the idea to divert the rain away from queuing customers and motorists. Later, it was adopted as the symbol for the company.

5. The Audi!

Ever wondered what those rings are? Well, the four circles represent the four companies that were a part of the Auto Union Consortium in 1932: DKW, Horsch, Wanderer and Audi.

6. Mercedes-Benz

This company is very confident of its dominance in quality and style over all things in land, air and water. Hence, the tri-star logo.

Mercédès — a Spanish girl’s name meaning ‘grace’ — was the name of the daughter born in 1889 to the Austrian businessman, Emil Jellinek, who had homes in Baden near Vienna and Nice. Jellinek is considered to be a pioneer in automobile industry, invested heavily in the field. On June 23, 1902, ‘Mercédès’ was lodged as the trade name and this was legally registered on September 26. From June 1903, Emil Jellinek obtained permission to call himself Jellinek-Mercedes, commenting that “this is probably the first time a father has taken his daughter’s name.”

Gottlieb Daimler had been technical director of the Deutz gas engine factory from 1872 until 1881. At the beginning of his employment there, he had marked a star above his own house on a picture postcard of Cologne and Deutz, and had written to his wife that this star would one day shine over his own factory to symbolize prosperity.

7. The Chupa Chups logo: a testimony of Salvador Dali.

The logo for this grand old daddy of lollypops was designed by none other than Salvador Dali. As a testament to its endurance, the Chupa Chups has kept the logo virtually unchanged since its introduction in 1969. But, then again, it was designed by the Salvador Dali. Yeah, the same surrealist painter who painted all those weird melting clocks.

Despite the simplicity of the logo, the masterstroke was displaying it on the top of the lollypop, where it will always be clearly visible.

8. Amazon: #YahanDekhLo

Well, the hashtag is surely trending in the social media space. But have you ever noticed the curved logo of Amazon? Looks like a smiley, right? Well, look very carefully. You will notice that the arrow goes from ‘a’ of Amazon to ‘z’. This is symbolic for their assurance that they have everything, “from a to z”.

9. BMW

This company has been very versatile and has made its presence not just felt, overwhelming, in every sphere it has ventured into.

BMW’s logo is a tribute to the company’s history in aviation. The logo shows a propeller in motion with the blue part representing the sky. After all, the company had a major role in building aircraft engines for the German military during the Second World War.

10. FedEx

We are all very familiar with this delivery service. But observe very closely, you will notice an arrow created by the whitespace between E and x.

Well, this arrow represents that the company always moves forward to the future.
