I knew that in most countries poor people were and are still criminalized by laws, because they annoyed “good citizens” in everyday life. But I never imagined that it could be for aesthetic reasons.
In France, we often meet rom people begging mostly at traffic lights, showing their mutilated legs or arms, to sorry the car drivers and passengers. Most people here think that this “theatre of pain” is undecent, and some cities passed laws to chase them out of town, especially some cities welcoming a lot of tourists.
I think that aesthetic feelings and tolerance is not enough studied in social science. Your article convinced me it’s worth taking a closer look at it.
