The Heresy of Clericalism

As a child growing up in the Coptic Church, I was educated that the celebration of the liturgy could not proceed without the active participation of the laity. However, I did not see it the other way around; that is, if the laity is in attendance and the “priest is not present,” the liturgy could not be celebrated. This perception is simply incorrect. The church is composed of people, and it is the people’s assembling that allows for the celebration of the liturgy to take place.
