Amid her sensational Eras Tour and blockbuster concert film, coupled with a burgeoning romance with NFL sensation Travis Kelce, no artist has basked in more prominent limelight in the past year than Taylor Swift.

Yet, could it be that the era truly belongs to SZA? The 2024 Grammy nominations unveiled on Friday strongly hint at this possibility, as the hip-hop luminary earned a remarkable number of nods, surpassing all other contenders. SZA, at 34, stands as a formidable presence in nine categories, contending for Album of the Year with “SOS” and Record of the Year for the chart-topping single from the album, “Kill Bill.” The latter track also vies for Song of the Year, where SZA is recognized as the writer under her birth name, Solána Rowe.

To secure victory in the evening’s most prestigious categories, she must outshine Swift, who is also a nominee in these three fiercely contested sections. Swift, at 33, clinched six nominations overall, including an unprecedented seventh nod for Song of the Year, a record-setting achievement in the history of music awards.

In the upcoming February awards ceremony, Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo are poised for a significant night, boasting six nominations each. Their presence intensifies the competition in key categories such as album, record, and song of the year, where they’ll contend with the formidable duo of SZA and Taylor Swift.

R&B sensation Victoria Monét and indie band boy genius Phoebe Bridgers closely trail SZA with seven nominations each. The accomplished individuals such as Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, Billie Eilish, and Brandy Clark share the spotlight with six nominations each. Additionally, Lana Del Rey, Coco Jones, Tyler Childers, Daniel Nigro, Ludwig Göransson, and 21 Savage have earned five nominations each.

Swift tied another record in this category. Midnights marks her sixth nomination for Album of the Year, putting her even with Barbara Streisand for most by a female artist. Notably, Swift accomplished the feat in only 15 years compared to Streisand’s 24. If the pop star wins, she will be the first artist to take home the trophy for Album of the Year four times.

Record of the Year

  • Jon Batiste, “Worship”
  • boygenius, “Not Strong Enough”
  • Miley Cyrus, “Flowers”
  • Billie Eilish, “What Was I Made For?”

  • Olivia Rodrigo, “Vampire”
  • Taylor Swift, “Anti-Hero”
  • SZA, “Kill Bill”

Cyrus, 30, made history alongside her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, with this nomination for “Flowers.” According to Billboard, they are only the third parent-child combination to each receive a nod for Record of the Year, joining Frank and Nancy Sinatra, along with Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie.
