Comedy is Not Just What Makes You Laugh
The first museum of comedy in the world is now opened in New York. With $50 million US dollars, the museum was built by the National Comedy Center of the United States. Located in Lucille Désirée Ball’s hometown Jamestown, the museum is not only a tribute to the American comedian, but also a dedication to the art of humor and the people that shaped it.
From shock humor to political satire, no matter which sense of humor your vibe is, this museum can certainly give you a laugh. But the institution aims higher than just laughs. It also redefines ‘comedy’.
What is your definition of comedy? Are you ready to have a laugh from the photography of our beloved artist Salvatore Matarazzo?
The photographer is an armed version of the solitary walker reconnoitering, stalking, cruising the urban inferno, the voyeuristic stroller who discovers the city as a landscape of voluptuous extremes. Adept of the joys of watching, connoisseur of empathy, the flâneur finds the world “picturesque”. — Susan Sontag (1977)
Born in Viareggio, 1980, Italian street photographer Salvatore Matarazzo has his style characterized by expressive portraits. Symbolizing the quirks and obsessions of our times, his photography masters the use of flash and close-ups. They usually capture direct eye contact which you wonder how the photographer catches those instinctive moments.
Street photography, also called candid photography, captures random incidents in public places. Matarazzo is influenced by well-known American writer Susan Sontag’s theory on photography. And his works have also shown his understanding for the key aspects of street photography — creating images at a decisive instant with precise framing and timing. From Matarazzo’s unique perspective, his sensitivity of observing the public has provided a witty sense of humor under his lenses.
