No More Microwave

Why we threw ours out of the house

Have you seen the story circulating around the internet about the plants that were watered with boiled water verses the ones watered with microwaved water? The plants watered with microwaved water didn't grow a bit!

Well, that’s not why we got rid of the microwave. That little gem has been dis-proven multiple times and is baloney.

We did it mostly because we wanted to instill a little bit of old fashioned-ness in our kids and home life. We wanted to get away from the “microwave culture” and back to crock pot and stove top cooking.

Since we changed to weekday vegetarians, we have little need for a microwave now. It sat dormant on a shelf 99% of the time. It took up too much space and we only really used it for popcorn. And we didn’t eat that much.

So we threw it out. We didn’t just put it away in storage, we put it in the back of the trash truck! There are times that I miss it. Just today, I was going to re-heat some hot dogs for the kids. Instead of just popping them into the microwave, I had to put them in a skillet and heat them up that way. It probably only took 5 minutes, but it was A LOT longer than the 1 minute it used to take. ☺

All in all, I think throwing it out was one of the best things we could have done. The kids now know that food doesn't come from the little beeping box. They know that some things just can’t be had instantly.

Shouldn't we all teach our kids that lesson?
