I Had a Lender Check my Credit, and Now my Phone Won’t Stop Ringing

Did you know that credit agencies sell your information? They will sell your name and address to other vendors — anything from mortgage lenders to moving companies.

To make matters worse, there are several online lenders who are actually in the business of selling your information to other lenders.

Both of these things can mean nightmares for anyone who has recently applied for a mortgage loan. Very often one person will become a lead for ten different companies. Those ten companies paid good money to get your name, email address, and phone number — and they are trained to hound you relentlessly.

Opt Out

There are two things to do in order to avoid having your information sold. In order to prevent the credit bureaus from selling your information, you need to opt out of credit offers from other vendors before you apply for a loan. You can opt out for five years, or permanently. To opt out, follow this link.

Go Local

Second, choose a local lender. Avoid a cloud or online lender portal — there is a very good chance they may sell your information. It’s so important to deal with a lender you can look at eye-to-eye. When you’re sitting in front of him or her, you know the loan officer is pulling your information in order to help you obtain a mortgage loan, not to sell it to somebody else.
